Research and Developement projects are very demanding for any business organisation; they represent a considerable investment of money, time, and effort. Decision to commence such a project is based on thorough consideration, and the project must be planned in detail, even more so when the project is financed from the company's own resources.
Internal developement projects – developement of solutions needed to improve company's own business processes, or developement of new products – are more numerous, but usualy smaller than R&D project cofinanced by governmental or European funds. Such projects are iniciated by the market demand, or by the neccessities of company's internal organisation. In such way Arctur has developed all the solutions that we are marketing today, as well as most of the IT tools we use for our own business organisation and management – spanning from ADS content management system with a number of functional modules, to PVD software for project management. On the other hand, some of Arctur's internal development projects dealt with issues such as translation and localization of ADS and GIDS software into Arab language.
R&D projects that are not neccessarily in direct correlation with some obvious market demand, but rather deal with the developement of new technologies and brand new solutions, are often co-financed by some outside sources (governmental funds, EU programmes). Such projects are usualy much more demanding compared to internal projects – from the viewpoint of timespan, efforts involved, and costs. These project may not always result directly in a market-ready solution. The importance lies in the acquiring of new knowledge and know-how, in the developement of solutions too expensive to be developed on company's own resources, in the establishement of long-term co-operation with top R&D organizations from Slovenia and abroad (universities, research institutes, hi-tech companies, ...).
Some of R&D projects that Arctur took part of:
AMPHORAE - Digital Paradigm of European Cultural Heritage. The goal of the "Amphorae" project is to develop and apply leading-edge information technology in the field of archeology, with the double objective of an up-to-date and synergic scientific knowledge, and of an increased awareness among the general public concerning the very foundations of the European cultural heritage. Taking as object of research the type of pottery vessel known as the amphora, spread in vast quantities all over Europe during Antiquity, the project aims to develop a computerized technology for visual recognition and analysis of amphorae types. This will be applied to a vast project-derived database which will in itself set updated standards of classification of this vast assemblage of material. Finally, by exporting its data onto Web-based platforms, both fixed and mobile, the project aims to outreach to a vast range of end users, from professional archaeologists to local communities, who will be able to interact openly and actively with the program, even contributing additional and new information at their disposal. Thus, the "story" of the diffusion of this "container" of Antiquity on the trade routes over land and sea –which demonstrates the existence a European Common market before its time-- will be made available through the functional combination of specialized IT and archaeological knowledge, with the ultimate aim of fostering a number of positive feedbacks among the general public --from a locally increased conscience of the cultural heritage to a general greater awareness of the cultural enrichment offered by museums, excavations sites, and intelligent tourism. Last but not least, the existence of an "Amphorae" database and its interactive technology on the Web might help to rescue a number of these ancient artifacts from oblivion, destruction, or illicit trade.

EPIC - Electronic Participation for Inactive Citizens. EPIC project focuses on enabling a wider inclusion of the elderly and retired EU citizens, who posses greater than average professional knowledge and skills, but also have the usual and inherent cognitive disabilities because of normal aging (partial deafness, weak-sightedness, physical disadvantage, learning difficulties etc.). These disabilities manifest themselves as difficulties concentrating, accessing, processing, and communicating information. This can be particularly distracting when sharing their knowledge in the internet with younger generations of citizens. EPIC project proposes to remedy this situation by making it easier for the elderly to publicly communicate their knowledge in an AI forum for mentoring the young. Multidisciplinary social and AI science research will determine the technical specifications, operating conditions, system rules and application design for an assistive internet forum which intelligently moderates information flow in the AI forum with regard to its perceived validity and trustworthiness. An experimental simulation of usage will create the recommendations for accessibility, display, consultation and article-credibility ranking.
